Phyllis Hyman - No One Can Love You More

Phyllis Hyman - No One Can Love You More

One
of the best female voices
of the last century

Phyllis Hyman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the St. Clair Village, the South Hills section of Pittsburgh. Born to an African American family, she was the eldest of seven children and a third cousin of actor Earle Hyman (best known for his recurring role on TV's The Cosby Show as Cliff's father, Russell Huxtable). After leaving Pittsburgh, her music training started at a music school. On graduation, she performed on a national tour with the group New Direction in 1971.
After the group disbanded, she joined All the People and worked with another local group, The Hondo Beat. At this time, she appeared in the film Lenny (1974). She also did a two-year stint leading a band called Phyllis Hyman and the P/H Factor. Hyman was discovered in 1975 by internationally known pop artist and music industry veteran Sid Maurer, and former Epic Records promoter Fred Frank, and signed to their Roadshow Records/Desert Moon imprint.

Hyman moved to New York City to work on her reputation. She did background vocals on Jon Lucien's Premonition and worked in clubs. It was during one of these performances that she was spotted by Norman Connors, who offered her a spot as a vocalist on his album, You Are My Starship (1976). The duo scored on the R&B charts with a remake of The Stylistics' "Betcha by Golly Wow!".

No one can tell me
That I'm pretending
Why should I play games?
Love's not a play thing

Questions people ask of me
For loving you
Why should I say the reasons on my own?

No one has wanted more than I want you
No on has needed more than I do
No one has wanted more than I want you
No one has needed more than i love you

No I'm not dreaming
Love has a meaning
You're all I live for
No one can give more

Questions people ask of me
For loving you
Why should I say the reasons on my own?

No one has wanted more than I want you
No on has needed more than I do
No one has wanted more than I want you
No one has needed more than i love you

No one has wanted more than I want you
No on has needed more than I do
No one has wanted more than I want you
No one has needed more than i love you

Marc Almond - Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart

Marc Almond - Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart

Something's gotten hold of my heart
Keeping my soul and my senses apart
Something's gotten into my life
Cutting it's way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown

In a world that was war
I once lived in a time
That was peace
With no trouble at all
But then you came my way
And a feeling I know
Shook my heart
And made me want you to stay
All of my nights
And all of my days

I wanna tell you now
Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
Something's invaded my night
Painting my sleep with a colour so bright
Changing the grey, changing the blue
Scarlet for me, scarlet for you

I've got to know if this is the real thing
I've got to know what's making my heart sing, oh yeah
A smile and I am lost for a lifetime
Each minute spent with you is the right time
Every hour (yeah) every day (yeah)
You touch me and my mind goes astray
And baby yeah, and baby yeah

Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
Something's gotten into my life
Cutting it's way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown

The Controllers - Just In Time

The Controllers -  Just In Time

The Controllers – Just In Time LP (1989)
Label: Capitol C1-91100

Alabama soul belters the Controllers began as the Epics in 1965. They became the Soul Controllers in 1970, and finally the Controllers. Reginald and Larry McArthur, Lenard Brown, and Ricky Lewis formed the lineup, and were especially effective on heartache ballads, though they also did competent up-tempo dance numbers.
They relocated to Miami in the late '70s and began recording for Juana. Frederick Knight produced some of their material, including the 1977 debut LP Somebody's Gotta Win, Somebody's Gotta Lose. They enjoyed moderate success with other Juana singles and LPs, though both "Heaven Is Only One Step Away" and "We Don't" were outstanding performances.
They moved to MCA in 1984. Stevie Wonder made a guest appearance on harmonica for their first MCA single, "Crushed," which reached number 30 on the R&B charts.
Their biggest MCA hit was "Stay," which peaked at number 12 in 1986. They moved to Capitol in 1988, issuing Just in Time that year.

A-ha - The Living Daylights (7'' Extended Version)

A-ha - The Living Daylights (7'' Extended Version)

"The Living Daylights" is the song performed by A-ha for the James Bond film of the same name. It was co-written by guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Bond composer John Barry.
Barry was listed on the credits as co-writer and producer, and the initial release of the song was his version. A second version of the song, re-worked by A-ha in 1988, later appeared on their third album, Stay on These Roads. Not surprisingly, the band prefers their version of the song to Barry's.

When interviewed on a late-night show in 1987, Barry said that he found working with the band exhausting secondary to the band's insistence on using their own version of the song for release. In an interview with Hotrod Magazine, keyboardist Magne Furuholmen said that "[the band's] fight with Barry left a rather unpleasant aftertaste. Apparently he compared us to Hitlerjugend in a newspaper interview." Waaktaar-Savoy claims that Barry never contributed to the creative process, and should not have his name on the credits.

"The Living Daylights" was released in the summer of 1987 and has become one of the most successful singles ever to be released by a-ha on the rock charts. The song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but it charted in the United Kingdom where it peaked at number five. It also remains a favourite with Bond fans.
The song remains one of a-ha 's most played songs in live concerts and has often been extended into a sing-along with the audience, as featured on the live album How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head. In live performances, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy often included the James Bond Theme in his guitar solo.
Evan Cater of Allmusic said the song was "a strong sample of Seven and the Ragged Tiger-influenced Europop, enhanced by Morten Harket's powerhouse falsetto vocals."
The single sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

The Synthetic Man - 41 min Before 12 (Techno Mix-Set)

Mtume - So You Wanna Be A Star (12'' Version)

Mtume - So You Wanna Be A Star (12'' Version)

Mtume (pronounced em-tu-may) was a funk and soul group that had several R&B hits in the 1980s. Its founder, percussionist James Mtume, previously played with Miles Davis in the 1970s. Other members of the group included Reggie Lucas and Tawatha Agee.

Mtume recorded three albums on the independent label Third Street Records: Kawaida (1973); Alkebu-Lan (1975); and Rebirth Cycle (1977). Not finding pop or R&B chart success, they signed to major label Epic Records in 1978, releasing the albums Kiss This World Goodbye (1978), and In Search of the Rainbow Seekers (1980), which found modest success on the R&B chart. Their 1982 album Juicy Fruit, however, provided Mtume with its biggest hit, when the title song reached number one for eight weeks on the U.S. R&B chart.

Mtume's 1984 album You, Me, and He had a #2 R&B hit with the album's title song. Their final R&B Top Ten hit was "Breathless" (1986) from their final album Theater of the Mind. They recorded with Epic Records until the late 1980s. Group member Agee went solo in 1987.

"Juicy Fruit" would later be sampled for the Notorious B.I.G song "Juicy", featured on his 1994 album Ready to Die, as well as the 2004 "Be Your Girl" remix by Teedra Moses and Raphael Saadiq. In 2007 it was sampled for Keyshia Cole's single "Let It Go", which also topped the US R&B chart.

Shalamar - Ooh Baby Baby

Shalamar is an American music group, primarily active in the 1970s and 1980s, that was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and show creator Don Cornelius. They went on to be an influential dance trio, masterminded by Soul Train producer Don Cornelius.
As noted in the British Hit Singles & Albums, they were regarded as fashion icons and trendsetters, and helped to introduce 'body-popping' to the United Kingdom.Their collective name 'Shalamar' was picked by Griffey.

Diana Ross & The Supremes

 Diana Ross & The Supremes

The Supremes was an American female singing group and the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s.

Originally founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, The Supremes' repertoire included doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway show tunes, psychedelic soul, and disco. They were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, The Supremes rivaled The Beatles in worldwide popularity, and their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.

Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit, formed The Primettes as the sister act to The Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form The Temptations).
Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio.

During the mid-1960s, The Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name reverted to The Supremes.

After 1972, the lineup changed more frequently; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all became members of the group during the mid-1970s. The Supremes disbanded in 1977 after an 18-year run.

Diana Ross & The Supremes - The Look Of Love

The look of love
Is in your eyes
The look your heart can't disguise
The look of love
Is saying so much more
Than just words could ever say
And what my heart has heard
Well it takes my breath away

I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you

You've got the look of love
It's on your face
A look that time can't erase
Be mine tonight
Let this be just the start
Of so many nights like this

Let's take a lover's vow
And then seal it with a kiss

I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you
Don't ever go

I can hardly wait to hold you
Feel my arms around you
How long I have waited
Waited just to love you
Now that I have found you
Don't ever go
Don't ever go
I love you so
Don't ever go
Don't ever go
I love you so

Stephanie Mills - Don't Stop Doin' What 'Cha Do

Stephanie Mills - Don't Stop Doin' What 'Cha Do

Stephanie Mills - Stephanie (LP) .......
Some of Stephanie Mills' fans believe that Stephanie was her third album, but it was actually her fifth.
Stephanie was her third album for 20th Century as well as her third album to reach gold, not to mention the third album that James Mtume and Reggie Lucas produced for her.
And when you consider that her first two LPs -- 1974's Movin' in the Right Direction on ABC and 1975's For the First Time on Motown -- did very little commercially, you can see why some people think that Mills launched her recording career with her commercial breakthrough of 1979, What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'.
Although not quite as strong as that album or 1980's Sweet Sensation, this is a generally pleasing LP that finds her romantic side prevailing.
You won't hear another "Put Your Body in It" on Stephanie; the singer was trying to avoid being categorized as a disco diva, and it's no coincidence that ballads and slow jams are dominant.
The track "I Believe in Love Songs" almost sounds like a statement of purpose from Mills, who fared well among quiet storm audiences with sleek offerings like "Magic," "Night Games," and the major hit "Two Hearts" (a duet with Teddy Pendergrass).
Stephanie falls short of essential, but even so, it's a nice record to have in your collection.

Keni Burke - Who Do You Love

Keni Burke - Who Do You Love

Kenneth M. Burke (born September 28, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois), better known as Keni Burke, is an American R&B, soul, funk, and jazz singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist who began his career as a member of the 1970s soul outfit, the Five Stairsteps.

Five Stairsteps
As a member of the Five Stairsteps, Burke wrote the group's first minor hit "You Waited Too Long" in 1966, but the group would see their biggest success with the million-selling song "O-o-h Child" in 1970. The group went on to sign with George Harrison's Dark Horse Records in 1975, and had their next hit with the Burke-penned "From Us to You", from their 1976 album 2nd Resurrection. The group disbanded soon after.

Solo career and session work

Skilled as a guitarist and bassist, Burke continued to work for the Dark Horse label as a session musician, while burgeoning a solo career of his own. In 1977, he released his self-titled debut album, which featured the songs "Keep on Singing", "Shuffle", and "From Me to You".

During this period he contributed instrumentation to songs by a diverse range of artists such as Sly & the Family Stone, Natalie Cole, Billy Preston, Terry Callier, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, and Gladys Knight.

In 1981, Changes, Burke's best-selling album to date, was released, containing the singles "Hang Tight" and his signature hit "Rising to the Top"—a big success in Chicago. The song has become a popular sampling choice for hip hop artists, having been borrowed by artists such as Doug E Fresh ("Keep Risin To The Top"), Big Daddy Kane ("Smooth Operator"), LL Cool J ("Around the Way Girl"), Pete Rock & CL Smooth ("Take You There"), Mary J. Blige ("Love No Limit"), O.C. ("Born 2 Live"), Sean Price ("Sabado Gigante") and once again by LL Cool J for the song "Paradise", with Amerie, though a lot of these songs have been mistakenly thought to use the bass line from the 1983 song "All Night Long" by the Mary Jane Girls. In 2006, "Rising to The Top" appeared in the soundtrack for the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, on fictional Quiet Storm station Vice City For Lovers. Burke's next release was the 1982 self-produced You're the Best.

Throughout the '80s and into the '90s, Burke continued his session and production work for artists such as Peabo Bryson, The O'Jays, The Jones Girls and Keith Sweat, and in 1998 released his last album to date Nothin' but Love, containing the hit "Indigenous Love", which was popular in the United Kingdom via the Expansion Records Label.

Soul Brothers Inc. The Story Of The Soul Brothers Inc. 1968 - 1974

Soul Brothers Inc.

The Story Of The Soul Brothers Inc. 1968 - 1974

(2010, Tramp Records)

In the 1960s and 70s hundreds of teenage funk and soul bands across the USA independently recorded and released their music. Most of them achieved only local success with their recordings, almost none of them ever made it onto the charts. This meant small runs of funk 45s which have since become highly sought after, hard to find and super collectable.

One of those many bands were the Soul Bros. Inc. out of Houston, Texas. They were likely one of the most important funk / soul groups in the city in the late 1960s until they broke up in the mid 70s, releasing tunes on their own SBI Records label. They were part of a much wider movement of African American protest via music in the era of civil rights. Now it's time for Soul Brothers Inc. to gain wider recognition - hopefully this excellent Tramp collection will do just that.

Kim Wilde - Four Letter Word (Late Night Mix)

Kim Wilde - Four Letter Word (Late Night Mix)

The daughter of '50s British pop singer Marty Wilde, Kim Wilde had several pop hits during the '80s. Initially, her synth-driven pop fit in with the new wave movement, but as the decade progressed, it became clear that her strength was mainstream pop.
In 1980, Kim Wilde signed with producer Mickie Most's Rak Records, releasing her first single, "Kids in America," early in 1981. "Kids in America" climbed to number two on the British charts that spring, while her second single, "Chequered Love," made it into the Top Ten; her self-titled debut album performed as well as her singles. The following year, "Kids in America" became a Top 40 hit in America, while Select kept her in the British charts. However, Wilde wasn't able to keep her momentum going and it wasn't until late 1986 that she had another hit with a dance cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On," which charted in the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic.
Wilde never had another hit in America, yet she was back in the charts in the summer of 1987 with "Another Step (Closer to You)," a duet with Junior Giscombe. After the single's success, she began changing her image, becoming sexier. The approach didn't entirely pay off, though she had a handful of hit singles from her 1988 album, Close, including "You Came," "Never Trust a Stranger," and "Four Letter Word." Wilde continued to record in the '90s, scoring the occasional hit, either in the dance or adult contemporary field.

I tell ya
It's hell yeah
When love says goodbye it's a four letter word
Because your heart knows
When love goes
The feeling is bad, it's the pits of the world
It's sad but true
When nothing you can do, can bring it back

Standing in the rain
She starts to cry
Is it all a game
She wonders why
Why it had to start
Why should it end, and take her apart

Because she shows it
She knows it
But what can she do, it's a four letter word
Because it shakes you
It breaks you
And when it's the end, it's the worst thing you heard
It's over now
And nothing you can do can bring it back

Calling out his name
She starts to cry
Guys are all the same
She wants to die
Hide away the tears
No one will see, and no one must hear
But oh

How can the love that she has be profane
And how can something that's so beautiful
Just Jeckyl and Hyde around
It's so sad...

I tell ya
It's hell yeah
When love says goodbye
It's a four letter word
Because your heart knows
When love goes
The feeling is bad
It's the worst in the world
It's sad but true
When nothing you can do, can get it back

Standing in the rain
She starts to cry
Shouting out is name
Four letter words

Chaka Khan - What Cha Gonna Do For Me

Chaka Khan - What Cha Gonna Do For Me

Yvette Marie Stevens was born on a Naval Training Station, Illinois. She adopted the African name Chaka Khan while working for the Black Panthers circa '69-70-ish. A few years later she teamed up with Kevin Murphy and Andre Fisher to form Rufus, debuting in 1973 the group earned a few gold & platinum albums before she went solo in 1978.

Chaka kicked off her own career with I’m Every Woman (written by Ashford & Simpson) and has never looked back. 1984 was such a great year for her that following it successfully was virtually impossible. In comparison, she could only go downhill. In 1989, after a couple of flakey albums, a concerted effort was made to put Chaka Khan back in the public eye. The excellent Life Is A Dance - Remix Project, was a retrospective of a decade in the hands of 11 acclaimed remix producers of the era. It scored well and her name was back on the front page, just as well really coz....

Chaka Khan returned to form with this 1992 gem. The Woman I Am is one of Chaka's best ever solo albums, her voice crystal clear and the tunes consistently melodic. Khan co-wrote five of the songs and the strong songwriting and vocal performance more than compensate for the early 90's production. This one of Chaka's most cohesive solo albums, despite having eight different production combinations on thirteen tracks, it all goes together well. This album just shows Chaka Khan at her best, Songs like Love You All My Lifetime, the single from the album, puts Khan's voice out in the forefront where it belongs. The album cut is a powerful and stunning R'n'B number with a very infectious hook.

Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Gloria Gaynor and Kathy Sledge (Sister Sledge)

On this release, Ben Wolf & Andy Dean have done a great job on The Diva Edit. This 8 minute Boilerhouse opus utilises all the strongest aspects of the song while remaining faithful to its original purpose. Elsewhere, The Love Suite is handled by a backroom team of some repute.
The mix is credited to David Shaw & Winston Jones (the only team to contribute a second track on The Remix Project album) but... a young Cevin Fisher (Burnin' Up) is on the keyboards along with Fred McFarlane (Somebody Else's Guy & Show Me Love) and the whole deal is engineered by Dave Darlington (NYC's busiest engineer, has his name on more vinyl than Porky Prime Cut).
As you would expect with those names involved, this is a House remix, built for the dancefloor and it does the job well. The Woman I Am won a Grammy Award back around 1993 and is probably Chaka at her finest. If you like the album version I'd reccomend the album.

Three decades and five Grammy Awards down the line she is still going strong. Chaka's latest album, Funk This celebrates 30 years of solo career and it sounds pretty damn good, I guess she's set for a few more years in the public arena.
