ABC - The Look Of Love (Part.1)

ABC - The Look Of Love (Part.1)

When your world is full of strange arrangements
And gravity won't pull you through
You know you're missing out on something
Well that something depends on you
All I'm saying, it takes a lot to love you
All I'm doing, you know it's true
All I mean now, there's one thing
Yes one thing that turns this grey sky to blue

That's the look, that's the look
The look of love

When your girl has left you out on the pavement (goodbye)
Then your dreams fall apart at the seams
Your reason for living's your reason for leaving
Don't ask me what it means

Who's got the look? I don't know the answer to that question
Where's the look? if I knew I would tell you
What's the look? look for your information
Yes there's one thing, the one thing that still holds true
(what's that? )

That's the look, that's the look
The look of love

If you judge a book by the cover,
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover,
Me I go from one extreme to another

And though my friends just might ask me
They say "martin maybe one day you'll find true love"
I say "maybe, there must be a solution
To the one thing, the one thing, we can't find"

That's the look, that's the look
The look of love
That's the look, that's the look
The look of love

That's the look, that's the look
Sisters and brothers
Should help each other
Oh, oh, oh
Heavens above
That's the look, that's the look, hip hip hooray, ay
That's the look, that's the look, yippee ai yippee aiay
That's the look, that's the look

Be lucky in love
Look of love

Lew Kirton - Do What You Want Be Who You Are

Lew Kirton - Do What You Want Be Who You Are

Smooth soul singer Lew Kirton was born in Barbados and grew up singing in his church choir; he later performed with island vocal groups as Jiggs Kirton. Also an accomplished drummer, he later moved to the United States and took over the drum chair in Sam & Dave's touring revue in 1969. He joined the Philly-styled soul group the Invitations in 1972 as lead vocalist, and they attracted some attention with singles like "They Say the Girl's Crazy" and "Look on the Good Side." Kirton went solo in the late '70s, signing with the Miami-based TK label family (best known for hits by George and Gwen McCrae) in 1977.

Teamed with writer/producer Clarence Reid (whose alter ego was, of course, the bawdy comedian Blowfly), his first releases on the Marlin subsidiary included the future collector's item "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." 1978 saw the single release of his best-known song, "Heaven in the Afternoon"; two years later, he issued his first full-length album, Just Arrived, on another TK subsidiary, Alston.

After recording as a guest vocalist with B. Baker's Chocolate Company, Kirton left TK and moved to New York. His second album, Talk to Me, appeared in 1983 on the Believe in a Dream label, and spawned singles in the title track and "Don't Give Up Your Dream (Hang On in There)." One further single, "Don't Wanna Wait," was released on MCA in 1986; despite having completed another album, Kirton has yet to find an outlet for its release.
Just Arrived was later reissued by the British label Expansion under the title Heaven in the Afternoon, with bonus tracks from Kirton's earlier singles included.

Yagya - The Inescapable Decay Of My Heart (LP)

Bound to split the biscuit, this one: esteemed Dub Techno and Ambient producer presents his Luomo-like suite of vocal-heavy House and Pop. As Yagya, Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson has borne three albums of exquisite ambient techno strongly informed by the likes of Gas, Basic Channel, and Brian Eno.

They're all much loved by those who own them, but they're also all instrumental, so it's a bit of a shock to hear full-blooded vocals covering the majority of 'The Inescapable Decay Of My Heart'. Luckily it does come with a disc of instrumentals for those who can't handle that level of human emotion, but as for us, we're not so turned off.

They're a bit naff at times, but but when they work, they do so surprisingly well, finding a fine middle ground between Moritz Von Oswald's most stripped down Dub House and the ebullient beauty of Vladislav Delay's Luomo work, all with extra atmospheric detail.

Black Box - Fantasy (Remixed Edit)

Black Box - Fantasy (Remixed Edit)

Black Box was an Italian house music group popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The members of the group included a trio made up of a club DJ (Daniele Davoli), a classically trained clarinet teacher (Valerio Semplici), and a keyboard and electronic music "wiz" (Mirko Limoni).
The three created an image for the Black Box act using French fashion model Katrin Quinol as its album/singles cover art and supposed lead singer in all of the group's music videos.

Davoli, Semplici, and Limoni had previously formed a group called Groove Groove Melody, producing dance music under names such as Starlight (who had a UK Top 10 hit in August 1989 with "Numero Uno") and Wood Allen. They went on to record music under many other aliases, most notably the alias Mixmaster, which scored a UK #9 hit in November 1989 with the song "Grand Piano".

Dee Dee Bridgewater - Lonely Disco Dancer

Dee Dee Bridgewater - Lonely Disco Dancer

One of the best jazz singers of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater (who was married to trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater in the early '70s) had to move to France to find herself. She performed in Michigan during the '60s and toured the Soviet Union in 1969 with the University of Illinois Big Band.

She sang with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1972-1974) and appeared in the Broadway musical The Wiz (1974-1976). Due to erratic records and a lack of direction, Bridgewater was largely overlooked in the jazz world by the time she moved to France in the '80s. She appeared in the show Lady Day and at European jazz festivals, and eventually formed her own backup group.

By the late '80s, Bridgewater's Verve recordings were starting to alert American listeners as to her singing talents. Her 1995 Horace Silver tribute disc (Love and Peace) is a gem, and resulted in the singer extensively touring the U.S, reintroducing her to American audiences. She would find even more success with her tribute album, Dear Ella, which won a Grammy in 1997.

This Is New, released in 2002, featured Bridgewater singing Kurt Weill songs, while 2005’s J’ai Deux Amours found her tackling French classics. For 2010’s Eleanora Fagan (1917-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee, Bridgewater moved from Verve to Decca/Emarcy, and offered her versions of several songs associated with Billie Holiday.

She followed this in August 2011 with her sophomore effort for the label; a compilation collection of jazz standards entitled Midnight Sun, with tunes fom previously albums ranging from "Angel Eyes" to Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman," and included one cut, "L'Hymne a la Amour (J'ai Deux Amours)," which was released previously only in Japan.

Heatwave - Leavin' For A Dream

Heatwave - Leavin' For A Dream

If you could use only one adjective to describe Heatwave's sound, it would be "smooth." The band's romantic ballads and slow jams were the epitome of smooth, and that adjective also describes many of their up-tempo funk grooves.

This isn't to say that Heatwave's funk lacked grit -- it had plenty of grit, but even so, it was an undeniably smoother style of funk than Parliament/Funkadelic, James Brown, Tower of Power, Rick James, or the Bar-Kays. In fact, when Kool & the Gang switched to a smoother, sleeker approach in 1979 and hired J.T. Taylor as its new lead vocalist, Heatwave was a big influence.

The Kool & the Gang that emerged on 1979's Ladies' Night is certainly a lot more Heatwave-like than the gutbucket, down-and-dirty Kool & the Gang of "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging." And it isn't hard to hear the parallels between Taylor and Heatwave's Johnnie Wilder. It's safe to assume that when Kool & the Gang was reinventing itself, its members had Too Hot to Handle and Central Heating in their collections.

With this excellent sophomore effort, Heatwave lived up to the promise it showed on Too Hot to Handle. The invigorating funk smash "The Groove Line" became a disco-era anthem, and the album's other big hit, "Mind Blowing Decisions," is a quiet-storm classic. From up-tempo funk grooves like "Party Poops" and "Put the Word Out" to the romantic Northern soul of "Happiness Togetherness" and "Leaving for a Dream," Central Heating is among Heatwave's strongest releases. Melba Moore - Don't You Want To Be My Lover

Melba Moore - Don't You Want To Be My Lover

There were early signs that Melba Moore would become an entertainer. The most obvious motivation was her mother, Bonnie Davis, who was also a successful singer. Witnessing the success that her mother endured, Moore knew the entertainment industry would not escape her.
The world of performing arts was formally introduced to her by way of dance lessons at the age of four. Moore's mother impressed upon her that "if you don't touch people's hearts, it doesn't mean anything." Her stepfather would also become an instrumental figure in the development of her early career.
All her siblings were musically inclined. Melba's interest was dance.

However, her stepfather insisted that she learn the piano. Against her will, she conceded -- and to her benefit. She gained much admiration for the blues and jazz pianists.
Upon graduating from college, she became a music teacher, which she found very fulfilling. Nonetheless, Moore's affinity for the entertainment industry persisted.

Charles Earland - Never Knew Love Like This Before

Charles Earland - Never Knew Love Like This Before

Charles Earland (24 May 1941 – 11 December 1999[1]) was an American jazz composer, organist, and saxophonist in the soul jazz idiom.

Earland was born in Philadelphia and learned to play the saxophone in high school. He played tenor with Jimmy McGriff at the age of 17 and in 1960, started his first group. He started playing the organ after playing with Pat Martino, and joined Lou Donaldson's band from 1968 to 1969.

The group that he led from 1970, including Grover Washington, Jr., was successful, and he eventually started playing soprano saxophone and synthesizer. His hard, simmering grooves earned him the nickname, 'The Mighty Burner'.

In 1978, Earland hit the disco/club scene with a track recorded on Mercury Records called "Let the Music Play", written by Randy Muller from the funk group, Brass Construction. The record was in the U.S. charts for five weeks and reached number 46 in the UK Singles Chart With Earland's playing on synthesizer, the track also has an uncredited female vocalist. He had several moderate Billboard R&B chart hits in the mid-70s and early 80s on Mercury and later Columbia Records.

Earland traveled extensively from 1988 until his death, performing throughout the USA and abroad. One of the highlights of his latter years was playing at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1994. Among the musicians that performed with him at the Berlin Jazz Festival was the Alabama born, Chicago resident, Zimbabu Hamilton on the drums. He died in Kansas City, Missouri of heart failure at the age of 58.
